Dear Lawson R-XIV Parents, Students, and Community Members:
Yesterday, the city of Kansas City issued a ‘Stay at Home’ order requiring Kansas Citians to stay at home except for “essential activities” in an increased effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. The Cooperating School Districts of Kansas City, shortly thereafter, followed with an announcement to continue their respective school closures through Friday, April 24th. For Lawson R-XIV, school will remain closed until further notice, but we want to assure all of our students, parents and patrons that we are fully committed to our “Continuation of Learning” plan and to continuing to provide lunch meals to students.
Tomorrow, Monday, March 23, 2020 will be our second day of “Grab N Go” meal service. We will continue to provide this valuable service Monday, Wednesday, and Friday each week during the school district’s closure. As a reminder, these meals are NO Cost for our students. We encourage all to participate. The pickup location is at Southwest Elementary in the gymnasium near the first grade entry doors. Our setup is designed to maintain social distancing and you will not have to do anything other than to walk in and pick up the meal(s) and/or milk. On Mondays and Wednesdays, there will be two (2) meals available for each student to pick up. The updated menu is available under the Parents tab at lawsoncardinals.org.
As parents we know that, just as when a child receives a new toy, the novelty does wear off. We want to reassure all parents and students that our teachers and staff are ready to meet the challenges that come with a distance learning plan. We are committed more than ever to reach each child to ensure a “Continuation of Learning” continues. If you have concerns for your child, please do not hesitate to reach out to your teacher, building principal or myself. If you don’t have the email already, you can easily find all of our email addresses in the directory located in the Quick Links section (lower left on home page) of our website.
One final note, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has announced that MAP testing will not take place this school year. This is quality decision on their part and one that we wholly support. We would rather Teach, Not Test in April. As always, “It’s a Great Day to be a Cardinal!”
Thank you & Sincerely,
Roger A. Schmitz, Superintendent
