The Lawson R-XIV Board of Education announced the hiring of Mrs. Megan Owens to be the new Principal at Southwest Elementary beginning with the 2018-19 school year. Mrs. Owens has served the district as the Assistant Principal at Southwest since 2014-15. She will be filling the position vacated by Mrs. Holly Simmons, who is retiring from education after spending her entire career serving the students, parents, and community in the Lawson School District.
Mrs. Simmons recently announced her retirement, effective June 30, 2018, concluding a career that included various elementary teaching assignments, Assistant Principal and Principal roles, all at Southwest. Additionally, Mrs. Simmons served in Missouri’s STARR teacher program traveling, mentoring, and developing other teachers throughout the northwest district for two years from 2002-2004.
In her 20th year in education, Mrs. Owens began her teaching career in the Excelsior Springs School District and in 1999 moved to the Lawson School District and taught in both the Middle School and Southwest Elementary until 2007. At that time, Mrs. Owens served the Richmond School District as both an assistant principal and elementary school principal. She returned to Lawson in the fall of 2011 as a teacher at the high school. In the fall of 2014, she transferred back to Southwest to serve as the Assistant Principal.
A 1994 graduate of Lawson High School, Mrs. Owens and her husband Terry reside in Lawson and have two sons, Spencer and Kaden, the sixth generation of her family to call Lawson home. Mrs. Owens earned her B.S. in Elementary Education from William Jewell College, M.S.Ed. and Ed.S. from William Woods University. Upon accepting the new assignment as Southwest Principal, Mrs. Owens stated, “I am excited and honored to have the opportunity to be the principal at Southwest Elementary - the same building where I attended elementary school. The past four years as assistant principal under Mrs. Holly Simmons have been very beneficial. We have an amazing staff, students, parents, and community who value and support our education system. I look forward to carrying on the mission and vision of SW and know that the future of our building and students is very bright!”
