Lawson Board of Education Approves Cardinals Nest Preschool - Fall 2024
The Lawson Board of Education (BOE) announces the approval of expanding Early Childhood Programming to include a state-approved preschool for children ages three and four beginning in Fall 2024. The Lawson BOE was unanimous in its approval (7-0), with an understanding that investing in early learning programs ensures young children have a strong foundation for success in school and life.
The Lawson BOE identified "Exploring the expansion of Early Childhood Learning Opportunities for preschool-aged students." as a 2023-24 Priority Goal for the District. Expanding early childhood learning goals were created due to the understanding of the importance of having our students "kindergarten ready." Kindergarten readiness doesn't just mean physical and academic skills; it also means social and emotional development. The 2024-25 school year will usher in full-day Cardinals Nest preschool for students ages three and four. Our preschool classes will be operated by certified early childhood teachers and follow state-approved learning standards. This new program will be available to our resident families at no cost. Admission into the program will be limited and based on needs assessments. Dr. Stephenson stated, “We desire to grow this program over the coming years to maximize the learning of our youngest Cardinals so they each have the tools required to enter the traditional K-12 systems and be academically and socially ready to excel as learners.”
Screening dates are scheduled for February 26, February 28, and March 4. Alternative dates may be scheduled through the Southwest Elementary Office.
Resident families of the Lawson School District interested in attending preschool in Fall 2024 must complete an enrollment packet and schedule a screening. Please contact Southwest Elementary's office (816) 580-7272 to request a packet and schedule a screening. Screenings can also be scheduled by using the attached QR code. (A limited number of spots are available - Screening Does Not Guarantee Acceptance - The District will use the student screening and other evaluation processes to determine acceptance.)

Exciting News: Lawson BOE approves launching a 7-12th grade Agriculture Education Program and FFA Chapter!
The desire of the Lawson school community to have an Agriculture Education Program and FFA Chapter has been a long time coming! The formal process for approval of the program started in December of 2023 with the adoption of the school district's 2023-2028 Strategic Plan. Expanding career education learning opportunities was listed as a goal in the plan, focusing on expanding our offerings to include agricultural education.
We are thrilled to announce that during the December 20th Board meeting, the recommendation was made by Superintendent Stephenson to expand career education programming for the 2024-2025 school year to include a 7th- 12th grade Agriculture Education Program and Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter. This recommendation was made after working through a year-long plan to ensure community, parent, staff, and teacher feedback was gathered and our student body had an interest in what the expanded programming could offer. The Board of Education approved the recommendation with a 7-0 vote. This initiative marks a significant step forward, providing students with valuable skills, knowledge, and experiences in agriculture.
With the approval of the program, we look forward to providing more opportunities for students interested in developing leadership, public speaking, and communication skills and, at the same time, learning the value and importance of teamwork, collaboration, problem-solving, and time management, along with entrepreneurial, technical, and practical skills.
We are confident that with time, our Agriculture Education Program and FFA Chapter will contribute to the holistic development of our students and prepare them for successful futures in agriculture and related fields and life as a whole.
The School District is currently accepting applications for the teaching position associated with the newly formed program. Click the provided Employment link to learn more and apply. https://www.lawsoncardinals.org/page/employment-page
