Lawson Board of Education Spotlights Family and Consumer Sciences Program

During the April Board of Education meeting, the Lawson Board of Education proudly spotlighted the district’s Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) program and its affiliated student organization, FCCLA, recognizing their strong commitment to preparing students with essential real-world skills.

Guided by the motto “Where real life becomes the curriculum,” the FCS program is designed to empower individuals, families, and communities to lead healthy, productive, and successful lives. The program is built upon three foundational pillars, Real-World Learning, Soft Skills, and Life Skills, ensuring students are equipped to live well, work smart, and lead with confidence.

A major highlight of the presentation was the recent success of both high school and middle school FCCLA members at STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Events. These competitive events provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge in career-ready and hospitality-focused areas.

Students recently traveled to Springfield, Missouri, for their State Star Events, competing against peers from across the state. Several Lawson students earned recognition on stage, receiving plaques for outstanding performance in their respective categories.

At the high school level, the FCS program offers a wide range of courses, including Foods I and II, Child Development, Independent Living, and Clothing, Textiles & Apparel. These courses extend beyond the classroom through meaningful, hands-on experiences such as earning the Clay County Food Handlers Certification, hosting the annual Dinner Theater serving more than 200 guests, and providing catering services for the Lawson Invitational Basketball Tournament.

The foundation for these skills begins in middle school, where students take courses focused on Health, Foods, and Life Management. Instruction emphasizes practical life skills such as budgeting, banking, and career exploration, as well as critical soft skills like leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving.

By highlighting the accomplishments of the FCS program and FCCLA students, the Lawson Board of Education reaffirms its commitment to providing educational experiences that promote career readiness and prepare students for success beyond the classroom.
